Well, I think I can officially say that Spring is here for everyone. Glad you could join us Midwest! And since winter is right around the corner again for those Northerners, I better get this post up. Sorry… As a Wisconsin-raised girl, I had to make a joke.

Anyway, spring showers are often in the forecast this time of year so I thought I’d honor that with these 7 rainy day crafts.

1. Paint a Picture

A piece of paper, a few paint colors, paintbrush…that’s all you really need. It’s a nice relaxing and quiet craft to do inside while the outside is being rained on. And I don’t know for you, but for me, the rain often inspires me.

2. Create a Paper Picture

“What’s a paper picture?” you ask. Well, it’s pretty self-explanatory. It’s literally using paper to make a picture. So, grab construction paper and cut out some shapes – circles, triangles, squares, etc. or get some pre-cut paper shapes or some tissue paper or design paper. Have your child take those shapes and make pictures out of them.

For example, take a circle and place a few triangles around it. Tada! You’ve made a sun.

3. Goofy Toilet Paper Roll Characters

This is fun because you literally can make anything you want. There are no rules to this project. In fact, you could make it into a game – the silliest looking character wins.

Give everyone one toilet paper roll. Grab any craft materials you have laying around – pipe cleaners, markers, paint, glitter, googly eyes…anything and everything! Grab some glue or tape and create! It’s fun to see what everyone comes up with and you can get rid of some of your loose, old craft supplies.

4. Rain Stick

What better way to celebrate a rainy day than with a rain stick…eh?…eh? Take a paper towel roll and press tacks around it forming a spiral shape. Decorate it. Cover one end of it. Fill it with beads or beans. Then cover the other end. Viola! A handmade rain stick. Or you can just by our DIY Rainstick Craft Kit.

5. Make Your Own Game

This one can take some time. The nice thing is, it doesn’t take many supplies to craft this up. All you really need is some tagboard and markers. To whip it up in the shortest amount of time, keep it simple.

For example, draw out just one long path from the starting spot to the winner’s spot. Create a small deck of cards with some tag board that contain directions on what to do if you pick up the card. Mark a few landing spots on your path where you are instructed to pick up a card. Boom. Done. Short, simple game. It’s no Monopoly. But your kids will enjoy creating it and playing it will pass the time.

Oh and just use different coins as your game pieces. Dice would be helpful too.

6. Handmade Workout Cube

This is fun and keeps your kids active! Double whammy!

You’ll need cardboard and strong tape to build your cube. Use thick markers or permanent markers to write on each side. On each side, come up with an exercise.

For example, one side could say 10 push-ups. Another side could say 25 jumping jacks. Another side could say run in place until someone rolls 10 push-ups.

7. Word-of-the-Day Paper Chain

Remember back in elementary school where you created paper chains? Your teacher handed out thin strips of colorful paper and you’d staple the ends together to create a link and then take another strip of paper, put it through the link, and staple that one together. You’d continue this process creating a chain. Remember that? I forgot why we did it but I do remember doing it.

Anyway, same process but before you start doing any stapling, write a word and the definition on each strip of paper. When your paper chain is made, hang it from the ceiling of your kids bedroom. Every morning have them take a link off and read the word and definition. Encourage them to use that word throughout the day.

If none of these sound fun to you or your kids, you can always have them spot-clean their bedrooms and bathroom. That’s what my mom use to do and I plan to follow tradition. 😉
