What’s STEAM
STEAM is an educational approach to learning Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. It allows students to work on their dialogue and critical thinking skills. As a result, students who engage in this kind of experimental learning are able to evolve their problem-solving skills and learn how to work through their creative process.
What’s the Difference Between STEM & STEAM
While both STEM and STEAM involve Mathematics, Technology, and Science, STEAM includes the arts– humanities, language arts, dance, music, visual arts, design, and new media. Both are equally important; however, STEAM acknowledges the importance of experimenting with one’s creativity. The main difference between STEM and STEAM is that STEM explicitly focuses on scientific concepts. STEAM does the same but through inquiry and problem-based learning methods that are used in the creative process.
Why is STEAM so Important
When children engage in activities that combine different elements of STEAM, they’re able to experience guided inquiry in which they must ask thoughtful questions, discover answers, and problem solve creatively. STEAM oriented projects involve teamwork and thoughtful dialogue in which children exchange ideas and discuss ways to actively problem solve. It allows them to have meaningful collaboration. It not only increases critical thinking skills but also provides a unique way to problem solve. By colliding art concepts with mathematical, technological, engineering or scientific, children are able to see through different lenses.
