With Earth Day approaching next month, April 22nd, this is the perfect time to start discussing different parts of the earth with your little ones. Earth Day was established to raise awareness about mother earth, it’s environments, and the animals that live in those areas. Plus, it’s a great time to introduce different types of animals with your children and how we as humans can contribute to keeping the earth healthy and clean rather than destroying it.
This habitat arts & crafts project is simple and easy for both the parent and the child. You’ll only need art paper of any kind and markers to start the craft.
1. Simply take a moment to ask your child what they know about different habitats to start the discussion.
a. What’s your favorite habitat?
b. What kinds of things do you see there?
c. What kinds of animals live there?
2. While they’re telling you what they love about their habitat, start drawing a black and white picture for them. You don’t have to be the best artist! In this example, our kids loved the ocean. We discussed the different types of animals that stayed there, what they would see (i.e. the boat and sun in the sky), and how we could actually work to keep the ocean clean!
3. Once you’re done, hand the picture over to them to add their creative spark to it. They can color the picture however they want. We encouraged the kids to think outside the box, coloring the fish whatever color they want.
