7 Types of Craft Tape and When to Use Them

Who knew all the options you have when it comes to tape?! I mean who really needs duct tape with patterns on it? Isn’t the purpose of duct tape to strongly hold two things in place? Not anymore! 😀

The great marketers for tape developers expanded the audience of “tape needers” to “tape wanters”. No longer is tape just a basic supply for an office or warehouse. No, no. Tape is now even geared towards kids! Exploitation much? Just kidding.

In all honesty, it’s actually genius for the tape industry and for us crafters, tape is now so much fun to work with and we can make it part of the design. So, really, I think we’re both benefiting.

Without further ado, here’s the 411 on seven types of craft tapes:

1. Designed Tape

Designed Tapes

Designed Tape is like your basic transparent tape in terms of quality of adhesive and it’s lightweight structure. But because of their design element, they’re awesome for scrapbooking, cardmaking, and similar paper crafts. Sure, you can use it for basic taping but I’d definitely save designed tape for special crafts.

2. Double Sided Tape

I wouldn’t say double-sided tape has a fun element; however, using it is fun! That’s because it makes crafting so much easier and cleaner! It’s a fantastic tape to craft with. Stripe a piece of double-sided tape and sprinkle glitter over it – that’s a lot of fun and you can only do it with this tape!

3. Duct Tape

I remember back in the day – about 20 years ago – the boys at school were already finding joy in crafting with the ol’ boring silver duct tape. They’d make belts or wallets. Who remembers that?

So, of course, duct tape is way cooler now with the incorporation of neon colors, themes, and patterns on it. It’s also strong and durable so it can practically hold anything together. I love it’s leathery texture too, which makes writing on it easy.

4. Foam Double Sided Tape

Foam double-sided tape has a particular use. It’s best for hanging decorations or pictures, but you can also use it as a 3D effect on projects.

5. Masking Tape

Masking tape is another fun tape with a variety of creative uses. It comes in all sorts of colors that make it fun for cool and creative creations like using it for a border or an outline of something. Plain is also great for labeling things because writing on it with a sharpie is a breeze!

6. Washi Tape

Remember how I said to sprinkle some glitter over the double sided tape? Well here’s a true alternative without the mess and a high-end quality look. This is like duct tape for girls. Your daughters will absolutely love working with washi tape and designing all sorts of materials.

7. Transparent Tape

Transparent tape is your basic, everyday use tape for lightweight bonding. It should be a staple craft supply in your household.

There you have it! I hope this list makes you a better crafter, a more creative crafter, but, at the very least, I hope you can walk away knowing types of craft tape and what they can be used for.
